Bing’s answer to the political dilemma

The water-cooler conversation of the week has to undoubtedly be the current political maze of agreements. Britain will have its first coalition government since 1974 and this has led to many a furrowed brow. The question on everyone’s lips is will it be David and Nick, or will it be Nick and ‘who’ following Gordon Brown’s resignation?

I’m sure many of the twenty nine and a half million voters last Thursday will have gone online as the first port of call to find out exactly what everything really means. And most importantly, how will it affect them.

With IE8, these queries will be answered by Bing’s Visual Search offering, providing the user with immediate answers from a selection of different search providers, offering an all-encompassing experience.

Similarly, at The Blue E we’ve been wondering how the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats’ views on electoral reform and other key policies align. The potential coalition has really brought the issue into focus and by using Bing’s Instant Answers capability, you can make that comparison yourself in seconds.

Political abbreviations and terms are confusing enough and Bing provides simplifies these issues and unlike many politicians it makes finding what you want a lot easier. Not sure what proportional representation means? Find out here http://www.bing.com/search?q=proportional+representation+&form=QBLH&filt=all&qs=n&sk=&sc=1-28

And to end with a bit of political nostalgia, check out Bing’s Visual Search gallery on past British Prime Ministers. http://www.bing.com/visualsearch?g=uk_prime_ministers&FORM=Z9GE9#

Add-On Feature: Plan Your Next Trip Without Leaving Your Homepage with IE8 Add-Ons

This week we’ve considered how Bing maps can help you with you travel problems and focussed on the thrill of running for charity in the London Marathon. Continuing the travel theme, today we’re looking at the best IE add-ons for when you’re looking to get away from it all.  You can take a look at the travel add-ons at http://www.ieaddons.com/gb/travel/

There are many great travel websites on the web. But isn’t it a pain when you’re on a site to have to surf back to your search engine to find reviews of the city on Trip Advisor? Joe Richards’ runs Ballofdirt.com – a popular travel bloggers website that lays out of a map of where their bloggers have been on their travels – explains how he found the solution with IE. “I really like the IE accelerators, they are so convenient.  On our pages you can click to see an itinerary of the exact journey a backpacker has made on their travels. By highlighting the place and using the IE  Trip Advisor accelerator you can be taken straight to hotel reviews from their website.”

Trip Advisor – Get the inside scoop on that hotel or resort with TripAdvisor.

If you want to know the Weather quickly for your new travel destination then you might want to install the IE8 Weather toolbar too. It’s constantly updated and you can change the location quickly, so it’s perfect for the person on the move.

The Weather Channel Toolbar for IE8 -  Find out today and tomorrow’s weather easily

If you want to search for a holiday without surfing away from your current page, then you can also add Expedia to your search box.

Expedia.com – Perform travel searches from every page

With IE you have all the tools at your disposal to plan a brilliant break. Now for the hard part – where on earth do you want to go?

Ferries, Trains and Automobiles – Homeward Bound with Bing

At the Blue E blog we’ve been amazed how many people we know have been left stranded by the Volcanic Ash cloud from Iceland. Even 11 days later, we still know of friends and relatives stuck in as exotic locations as Thailand, Egypt and Morocco.

Those that have made it home have talked about the community spirit from stranded holiday makers, but also the worry of lack of control over their holiday and having to carefully plan their trip home with their family in tow. Stranded without a sat-nav or even a local map in hand, how do you plan a trip home that you never intended on making?

We’re very proud that Bing maps route planner has really come into its own this past week. Just imagine you’re stranded Tipperary in Ireland and trying to get to Chelmsford, Essex. A quick tap of your location and where you want to get to in Bing maps brings up a 63 step list of instructions on which roads to take in this 484 mile journey. Bing directs you all the way to the Dun Laoghaire-Holyhead Ferry and even recommends checking the timetable for the ferry. All you need to do, is:

  • Direct IE8 over to http://www.bing.com/maps/ and click through to the route planner.
  • Just tap in where you are and where you want to go, handily signalled as ‘from A to B’
  • Choose if you’re using your car or walking. And click ‘get directions’. And… that’s it.

You can click specific steps on the left hand side to see the map zoom into the exact road you should be on. And you can ask to see the quickest route, which might not all always be the shortest as the bird fly’s. To take your directions on the move with you, a link at the bottom allows you to send the details to yourself by e-mail or to you’re your mobile phone as a link.

The Ash cloud has shown us how we have come to rely on Planes so much, but it’s a great that by knowing a few tips on using Bing you can decide to get home on your own. This week our theme on the Blue E blog is travel – however you get around. So later on this week we’ll be welcoming MSN’s Life & Style Editor Nicole O’Neil who will be telling us about her training for the London Marathon.

What is Internet Explorer 8?

Internet Explorer 8 is the latest Internet browser offering from Microsoft. Designed to give you the best internet experience, the new browser is optimised for MSN and incorporates a plethora of new features like Web Slices and Accelerators, plus, you can download the nifty new Bing toolbar to further complement your browsing.

The new IE8 will make the web faster, safer and easier than ever before, why? Sit back as we take you through some nifty new technology that makes up the world of The Blue E.

Get a slice of the action

Is your Favourites list as long as your arm? As part of our daily web browsing, most of us visit many different sites, and this can be time consuming. So many websites, so little time!

What if there was a way to view all of the cool bits in one go?  Well consider IE8 your fairy godmother, as Web Slices brings it all to you. Web Slices allow you to subscribe to portions of your favourite websites.

With a single click, you can view and interact with the latest updates on those sites you have earmarked, without leaving your current page; catch-up with the latest headlines, check the status of an online auction, view status updates from your social network, or keep tabs on the latest football scores. It will constantly alert you of new content by changing colour or going bold.

Accelerators

What is an Accelerator? The clue is in the name, Accelerators make it faster and easier to connect to a host of popular web services.

Accelerators are built into IE8, so if you’re going out later and need to look up an address, using a price comparison site to shop around, or need language translation services on the fly – you can get going from the off. Each of these tasks are time consuming and require numerous steps from start to finish.

Use Accelerators to let you preview online services just by pointing your mouse at them. Search, map, e-mail, translate, or share content from any web page you’re currently viewing.

Internet Explorer 8 comes specially preinstalled with Accelerators from Bing and MSN Video.

InPrivate

InPrivate Filters and Browsing are a series of security measures designed to make your browsing session safer and keep your data more secure.

Whenever you surf the web some of the information about your visit is automatically sent to the website provider. Filtering helps you control this information and choose which providers (if any) receive information about the places you visit.

IE8 gives you two options; automatic filtering or manual where you can specify websites yourself, both can be toggled on/off with just a few clicks.

InPrivate Browsing helps prevent Internet Explorer from storing data about your browsing session. This includes cookies, temporary Internet files, history, and other data. Toolbars and extensions are disabled by default.
